Although... who's to say that these ships actually contain humans? I mean, clearly, anyone who watched the program could say, but I have never seen it, so I feel perfectly comfortable speculating.
Maybe these ships belong to the Century Toad, the creator of life and guardian of the mole men? He'll need something to escape in when he emerges from the center of the earth and unleashes the cataclysmic blood wave. (Is there any other kind of blood wave, really?) I'm sure he'll bring some human slaves along, though.
